The noise of the earthquake was one of its most notable features, but the noise of the aftermath was significant too, with the double beat of Chinook helicopters overhead, the incessant sirens of the emergency services, and the alarms of cars crushed by falling buildings which continued to sound for days until the cars' batteries died. This buidling was a multi-storey carpark. The fire in the distance covered several citiy blocks.
