 People made homeless by the quake gathered around braziers with only rugs to keep them warm, while the waited for news and help from the authorities. The wait was frequently a long one.

 People were shocked by the power of the quake and the level of destruction, wanting to help but initially were unsure what to do.

 The collpased Hanshin Expressway, Route 43, was probably the signature image of the Kobe earthquake. This is that same section a year to the day after the quake. The Japanese government threw all available resources at rebuilding the infrastructure of Kobe to help it get back on its feet.
