 The docks in Kobe were badly damaged by the earthquake, but the real damage came with shipping firms moving their business to other Japanese ports. By 2005, ten years after the quake, Kobe as a port was only operating at about 80% of it's pre-earthquake capacity.

 Survivor of the Kobe Earthquake - 10 years on.
Taniguchi-san: "I ran straight out of the house. It was dark. I took refuge straight away in the local centre. At about 9am the fires started. Total destruction."

 The collpased Hanshin Expressway, Route 43, was probably the signature image of the Kobe earthquake. This is that same section a year to the day after the quake. The Japanese government threw all available resources at rebuilding the infrastructure of Kobe to help it get back on its feet.
